Navigating the Turbulent Waters of Life
This course offers a Buddhist perspective on three major challenges that emerge for us all in this human existence. The three challenges are framed in the story of Siddhartha Gautama’s first journey outside the palace where he had grown up. The future Buddha encountered for the first time a person who was old, one who was ill, and a corpse. Siddhartha then encountered a wandering ascetic who inspired his long journey to awakening. These came to be known as the “Four Heavenly Messengers”. The course will offer a container for exploring each person’s experience in meeting old age, sickness and death. This is a participatory course. The sessions will include meditation practice, didactic input, participant and small group sharing, and experiential exercises designed to heighten awareness of our responses to the challenges in question, as well as point toward possible alternatives likely to engender well-being.
